Proper maintainence of your roof is really necessary to keep your family safe.Many people neglect proper caring of your roof and this leads to a serious trouble sometimes.I would suggest you to manage your roof porperly and do not overlook small damages or leaks which might have a place in your roof and to repair it as soon as possible.To properly maintain it you should know the basics of it so lets discuss the basics of roof maintainance.

1- Do not allow the water to collect around the foundation.If much water gets collected into the soil then slowly and gradually it would start seeping in through the wall and would ultimately damage it.

2- Have a good drainage system,the roof gutters should be kept clean.If water is allowed to collect in the roof gutters then ultimately it would get leaked into the basement.The best way is to keep the gutters clean so that water passes through it during rains.

3- The slope of the soil should be away from the house,this would prevent the rainfall from entering the house through walls.Use clean fill dirt in building up the soil around your house.This will definitely add to your waterproofing efforts.

4- Do not allow bushes to grow near the foundation.If this happens cut it to allow for the drainage system to work well.

5- You can also check the predicted flood levels of the rivers nearby your house and if there is some problem then you can check your landscape to prevent the water from entering your house.The predicted water levels should act as a warning and you should act before it.

6- Look for any cracks near the foundation and try to repair it permanently.If you want you can take the help of a professional in this regard.Do not overlook smaller cracks as they can invite larger cracks and hence water seepage in future.

7- The best way to protect the basement leak is to seal the foundation walls with a waterproofing agent.Make sure you do it after thoroughly cleaning the surface.

How to fix the rafter

To fix the rafter, you are basically just cutting out another rafter to put right next to it, otherwise noted as the "sister" rafter. Cut your plywood to match the length of the existing rafter. If part of the old rafter is split in half, try to remove it and then accommodate for the length subtracted with the new wood. Use a tape measure for measurements and a pencil to mark where to cut. Then use a table saw to finish the job.
